To reflect the school’s aim to provide a truly international curriculum, a diverse program of studies has been introduced. The school teaches from Toddler 1 – 12th Grade with both Dominican and International staff offering a wide range of curriculum opportunities to students
Common Core State Standard curriculum is followed for Language Arts and Math classes. While Science classes follow the Next Generation Science Standards curriculum.
The Preschool program at Puntacana International School is for students in or below the kindergarten grade. This program focuses on students’ physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development. We encourage students to solve problems, initiate activities, and learn through active exploration.
Classes taught in the Preschool program include Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and more. The school year is divided into three trimesters and grades are given based on development in each area.
Each class has a homeroom teacher who instructs core subjects in English. Art, Music, Physical Education, some having multiple classes in a single grade. Information Technology classes are supported by the rest of our staff. Lengua Española and Ciencias Sociales are instructed in Spanish
The Elementary School utilizes standards-based assessments to evaluate student knowledge and mastery. Students are assessed through various academic indicators including participation, classwork, homework, and projects. Throughout the year Parent-Teacher conferences maintain an open line of communication for our educational community
In the Senior School program students follow a bilingual curriculum for core subjects as well as Expressive Arts, Lengua Española, Ciencias Sociales, Ciencias Naturales, Values, and IIT (Interactive Innovative Technology). The program also offers co-curricular and extracurricular activities like Coding, Robotics, Model UN, Student Council, and more. Our main goal is to develop students' social, emotional, physical, and intellectual potential.
Students should arrive by 7:30 a.m. for the start of daily morning registration at 7:40 a.m. reporting directly to their homeroom. At 7:50 a.m. the bell rings for the flag ceremony. Students are expected to stand and show respect during this time. Assemblies take place after the flag ceremony on Wednesdays. Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. The end of the school day is 2:30 p.m. after afternoon registration. In preschool, regular days begin at 8:00am and ends at 1:30pm.
PCIS has participated in the Junior Achievement Program for many years. The program allows students to develop aspects of their personal and intellectual knowledge and has been very successful in past years. Every year about 20 parents and members of the local community volunteer by sharing their knowledge and expertise with our students. The programs are taught in both the Elementary and Senior schools and allow students to practice what they have learned in the classroom and be prepared for their future.
Model U.N.The Model United Nations program engages students with current issues and prepares them to be better global citizens. Students and faculty work together to propose resolutions addressing global concerns. Through the program, students build an understanding of building diplomacy, compromise, negotiation, and debate skills. Students often participate in an annual international conference in the United States. The FUNDGLODE sponsors the international conference (CILA) and develops other activities during the year for young people to be a part of actions that affect society positively.
